MacBook Pro 14 and 16 inch with M1 Pro or Max

The model where Apple brought the ports back. More ports means more you can do, and also more places where something can give out.

The ports that came back

After years of USB-C only, HDMI, an SD card reader and MagSafe returned. Pleasant for the user, but for the board it means three extra connectors that take mechanical abuse and sit directly on it.

We see that in practice: an HDMI port that stops giving an image, a reader that no longer recognises cards, a MagSafe pulled out of line. Each of those is a targeted component-level repair, not a reason to replace a whole board.

What we see most often on this board

  • HDMI gives no image while USB-C to a monitor works
  • The SD card reader no longer recognises cards
  • MagSafe will not charge or makes poor contact
  • Liquid went over it
  • It gives no sign of life
  • The speakers distort or one side drops out

Bigger board, better odds

This is a substantial board with plenty of space between components. That sounds like a detail but with liquid damage it makes a real difference: the liquid has more places to go without immediately hitting something critical, and there is more room to work under the microscope.

Here too, most faults sit at the edges and not in the core. A dead port or a burnt converter can be replaced. The processor itself we rarely see give out.

Expensive machine, so read it out first.

On these machines there is often work with money attached: editing, photography, design. That is why on this model we ask as a matter of course whether there are projects on it that are not yet stored anywhere else.

If there are, we read out first and repair after. That costs a little more time and it prevents the one scenario that really hurts.

Questions about this model

My HDMI is dead. Is that the whole board?

Almost never. It is the port itself or the circuitry behind it, and that is a targeted repair. You do not pay for a board that otherwise works fine.

I work on this. How long will I be without it?

Count on five working days from arrival to return. If that is too long because you need it, say so and we will see whether it can be quicker.

Water got on it but it still works. Do I need to do anything?

Yes. Corrosion keeps working, even though it runs today. The sooner it is cleaned, the smaller the chance you end up with a dead board a month from now.

One port dead, or nothing at all?

Both repair here without the whole board having to come out. Tell us what is not working and we will know where to start.
